This study investigated the effects of an Aronia melanocarpa hot water (AMW) extract on the serum lipid concentration and bone formation in ovariectomized rats. Twenty four nine-week old female Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned randomly to four groups: sham-operated rats (SHAM), ovariectomized control rats (OVX-CON), and ovariectomized rats supplemented with AMW extract at 50 mg/kg bw (OVX-AMW50) and 200 mg/kg bw (OVX-AMW200). Three OVX groups were ovariectomized surgically while the SHAM group was sham-operated. The final body weight of the OVX-CON group increased compared with the SHAM group, confirming the induction of menopausal symptoms, but decreased by the administration of AMW. The total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the OVX-CON group were higher than those in the SHAM group. In particular, upon the administration of AMW extract after the ovariectomy, the triglyceride levels tended to decrease significantly. The serum alkaline phosphatase activity, which is an indicator of bone formation, improved in the AMW extract groups compared to the OVX-CON group. The collagen content in the connective tissues decreased by ovariectomy, whereas the OVX-AMW50 group showed a higher concentration than the OVX-CON group. According to these results, the AMW extract might have potential for the treatment of lipid metabolic syndrome and osteogenesis during menopause caused by an estrogen-deficiency.
